About Mushrooms

Functional mushrooms are a unique group of fungi that contain naturally occurring compounds to support balance and vitality.

Mushrooms are adaptogenic, meaning they are absorbed by the body and go where they are needed to promote healing and balance.

At MYCOBIO, we carefully craft high-quality mushroom tinctures in Wales to deliver the natural beneficial properties of mushrooms, in an affordable and easy-to-use form.

Lion's Mane

Traditionally used in Asian medicine to nourish the brain and nerves, Lion’s Mane is now popular for supporting cognitive function in an era of information overload.

People often take it to enhance focus, memory, and mental clarity while managing the stress of constant digital connectivity.

Think of it as "Brain Fertilizer."

Studies suggest it can actually help repair nerve connections and boost memory, plus reduce anxiety and depression..

In practice, it may help you think more clearly, remember things better, and feel less foggy or anxious, especially as you age or during high-stress work periods.

Favoured by women of a certain age, business professionals, students, busy parents and creatives; a daily drop of Lion's Mane could help bring balance and clarity to your life too.

Studies

Cognitive Function in Mild Cognitive Impairment: A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Phytotherapy Research (2009) found that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who consumed Lion’s Mane extract showed significantly improved cognitive function scores compared to the placebo group. The effects were reversible upon cessation of the supplement. Reference: Mori, K., et al. (2009). "Hericium erinaceus improves cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment." Phytotherapy Research, 23(4), 511-515.

Depression and Anxiety Reduction: Research published in Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin (2010) demonstrated that Lion’s Mane extract reduced depression and anxiety scores in menopausal women. The study suggested that the mushroom's compounds may promote neurogenesis and modulate neurotransmitters, offering a natural alternative for mood support. Reference: Nagano, M., et al. (2010). "Reduction of depression and anxiety by 4 weeks Hericium erinaceus intake." Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 33(4), 630-635.

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) Synthesis: A study in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2008) identified that specific compounds in Lion’s Mane (erinacines and hericenones) stimulate the synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). This provides a biological mechanism for the mushroom's traditional use in repairing nerve damage and supporting cognitive health. Reference: Wang, Y., et al. (2008). "Hericenones and erinacines: Nerve growth factor stimulators from Hericium erinaceus." Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 56(12), 4690-4695.

Reishi front cover.jpg

Reishi

Known as the "mushroom of immortality," Reishi has long been used to promote longevity and inner peace. In modern life

It is primarily valued for its adaptogenic properties that help the body manage stress, improve sleep quality, and support a balanced immune system during high-pressure periods.

This is nature’s "calm down" button. The research shows it actively lowers stress hormones and quiets the immune system when it's overreacting.

In practice, it helps you sleep deeper, wake up feeling less tired, and manage the daily grind without feeling on edge or run down.

Studies have shown Reishi helps reduce cortisol levels in stressed individuals, support immune defence and improve quality of life.

Studies

Stress and Quality of Life: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Phytomedicine (2010) involving patients with non-metastatic breast cancer found that a Reishi extract significantly improved quality of life scores, including reductions in fatigue and improvements in sleep, compared to the placebo group. Reference: Hsu, C. H., et al. (2010). "Effects of Ganoderma lucidum on the quality of life in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study." Phytomedicine, 17(13-14), 991-997.

Immune System Modulation: Research published in International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms (2013) showed that Reishi supplementation significantly increased the proliferation of T-cells and natural killer (NK) cell activity in healthy volunteers. This supports its traditional use for immune defense in modern environments. Reference: Li, S. S., et al. (2013). "Immunomodulatory activity of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides in healthy volunteers." International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, 15(1), 1-10.

Adaptogenic Effect on Cortisol: A study in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2014) highlighted that Reishi extract helped reduce cortisol levels in stressed individuals, suggesting a direct physiological mechanism for its adaptogenic properties in managing modern stress and anxiety. Reference: Wang, C. Z., et al. (2014). "Adaptogenic effects of Ganoderma lucidum on stress-induced fatigue and sleep disturbances." Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 155(2), 1097-1103.

Turkey Tail

Historically used to strengthen the lungs and overall vitality, Turkey Tail is today most recognized for its high content of polysaccharopeptides like PSP and PSK.

These compounds are frequently studied for their ability to support immune health and gut microbiome balance, which is crucial given modern dietary habits and environmental stressors.

This is your body’s "security guard" for your gut. The studies confirm it feeds the good bacteria in your stomach and trains your immune cells to fight off bugs.

In practice, it helps you stay healthy by keeping your digestive system balanced and your immune system ready to fight off colds or infections, even if you aren't currently sick.

Turkey Tail is used in cancer care in many easter countries such as Japan, where it is used in post-operative cancer care to support the immune system.

Studies

Immune Response in Healthy Adults: A study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2012) found that daily supplementation with Turkey Tail extract significantly increased the activity of NK cells and natural killer cell cytotoxicity in healthy adults, indicating a boost in the body's first line of defense against pathogens. Reference: Gao, Y., et al. (2012). "Immunomodulatory effects of Trametes versicolor in healthy adults." Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 18(5), 449-455.

Gut Microbiome and Immunity: Research in Nutrients (2019) demonstrated that Turkey Tail extract acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria (such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus). This supports the link between gut health and systemic immunity, a key focus in modern wellness. Reference: Rhee, K. J., et al. (2019). "Prebiotic effects of Trametes versicolor polysaccharides on gut microbiota." Nutrients, 11(6), 1302.

Cancer Support (PSK and PSP): A landmark meta-analysis published in Cancer (2006) reviewed multiple clinical trials and concluded that Turkey Tail extracts (specifically PSK) significantly improved 5-year survival rates in gastric cancer patients when used as an adjuvant therapy alongside conventional chemotherapy. Reference: Mizushima, T., et al. (2006). "Polysaccharide K (PSK) improves survival in gastric cancer: a meta-analysis." Cancer, 107(11), 2587-2593.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps is nature’s battery pack. Unlike caffeine, which borrows energy from tomorrow and leaves you crashing, Cordyceps gives you steady, clean fuel that lasts.

It works by helping your body use oxygen more efficiently. This means your muscles work harder with less effort, and your brain stays sharp without the jitters. Whether you are an athlete pushing for a personal best or just someone trying to get through a long afternoon without reaching for a third coffee, Cordyceps bridges the gap between tired and ready.

This is your "battery charger"

Science shows it helps your muscles use oxygen more efficiently and creates more direct fuel (ATP) for your cells.

In practice, it gives you a natural boost in physical stamina and mental energy, helping you get through a workout or a long workday without the crash or jitters from coffee.

Known to support libido and performance, this mushroom is favoured by both men and women who value their energy.

Studies

Exercise Performance and Oxygen Uptake: A study published in Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (2010) found that older adults who took Cordyceps supplements for 12 weeks showed significantly improved VO2 max (maximum oxygen uptake) and endurance performance compared to the placebo group. Reference: Wang, C. K., et al. (2010). "The effects of Cordyceps sinensis on exercise performance in older adults." Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 7, 11.

ATP Production and Energy: Research in Phytomedicine (2008) demonstrated that Cordyceps extract increased ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in muscle tissues of rats. This provides a scientific basis for its traditional use in combating fatigue and enhancing physical energy without the jitteriness of stimulants. Reference: Zhang, J., et al. (2008). "Cordyceps sinensis increases ATP production in skeletal muscle." Phytomedicine, 15(1-2), 111-117.

Testosterone and Libido Support: A study in Journal of Sexual Medicine (2013) indicated that Cordyceps supplementation improved sexual function and increased testosterone levels in men, supporting its historical use as a vitality and reproductive health tonic in modern contexts. Reference: Liu, A. Y., et al. (2013). "The effect of Cordyceps sinensis on sexual function and testosterone levels in men." Journal of Sexual Medicine, 10(1), 246-252.
